Is a quick response considered "desperate" or "responsive"?

We were in discussions today with various legal firms (they will remain nameless). We are looking to get some work done so we have briefed the work out to a few firms and looking to see what comes back.

I am writing about one of the firms we met up with. We met for an hour with a partner and briefed him on the work. We discussed rates and estimates at the end of the meeting and he offered to send through a proposal immediately. We thought nothing of it as we thought "as if we will get this straight away"?

Well we were wrong. We not only got it immediately, we got it within the hour :).
In the e-mail it stated the costs and that the partner was in a position to start in the coming days with the first draft of what we wanted next week. WOW!

So do I think that,
a) The firm is desperate for the work and I perhaps should be worried? or
b) They are super responsive and keen for the business and its an example of what I should expect from here on in?

Now in the current climate I should appreciate this behaviour as things aren't that full on for professional services firms, so when a client is there you want to impress them and get their business. But what behaviour is "desperate" rather than appropriately "responsive"?

I like the responsiveness and it always presents an opportunity to negotiate on rates anyway. :)

Anyone have any other thoughts/comments?

Hey Eddie Geller, i'm erading your blog as apart of my business managemnet class in yr 11 at school atm. i think that you have a point about how quickly the business responded to you. I think that if they were desperate for work, and accepted so quickly, they would want to and obviously do a good job, so their business would go good again. haha GOOD LUCK!

Well, on any given day I would choose to work with a company that delivers their proposals and replies (email) feater than slower.

Maybe there are desperate for work, but maybe they are doing a good job. If good service is combined with a good SharePoint product I would be confident that this is a good company to work with.

On the other side, if I have to wait for 3 weeks to get response from a company I would never work with them. Maybe they are busy with other projects, but that's not my problem. That's unprofessional.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't mind if they are desperate for work, particularly in current times, also it offers an opprtunity for better rates (ofcourse no compromise onquality, may be a little bit :) )

Another aspect is pre-sales response time vs post-sales response time . I had a bitter experience with my buidler when I built my house. They are good size company as well as were the fastest in coming back to me but during pre-sales phase only and that was one of the reasons I went with them, thinking they would deliver fast but instead they took 40-50% more time to build. So having a quick reference check may be a better option to validate and verify the response time.

Its interesting that you pointed it out.

During the tender selection process for a large SOA program in our company recently, one of the criteria was responsiveness and efficiency. We sent the same technical question to all prospects and marked them based on the quality of the reply and efficiency.

so there you go!

Eddie,

Fast response equals "willingness to do business" equals "hunger" in my books.

It reflects upon the individual as well as the company s/he represents; since both need to concur on that mindset.

A good post btw.
Thanks for sharing.

cheers

Hi Eddie

A fast response equals "willingness to do business" which is a result of 'hunger' in my books.

It reflects upon the individual as well as the organisation; since they need to concur on this attitude to business.

A good post; thanks for sharing.
